Raj Thakore
Network Engineer
It was back in the summer of 2018 when Raj Thakore first considered joining the network practice at ESTI. And what a journey it’s been since then!
Raj was trained in the field of Computer Engineering and got his start in the world of IT in 2011 in India. Once he was out in the real world and looking for work, he realized he wanted to be in the networking area – it seemed most interesting to him. He was fortunate to find work with a company called Cyberoam Technologies (now owned and operated by Sophos). This company dealt with building and deploying next generation firewalls and Raj was hired on their global support team. Raj quickly learned how to deal with Tier 1 issues for clients. But in 2013, he decided he needed a fresh challenge.
He worked with a friend assisting with network deployments and trouble-shooting, and made the big move to Canada in 2014. Raj completed further education and officially became a Computer Networking Technician to ensure his credentials were on-par with Canadian standards. This included acquiring the CCNP Routing and Switching designation from Cisco. He quickly found work with a well-established business in Saskatoon doing Tier 1 work. It didn’t take long for Raj to be promoted to a role designing solutions, and when a space opened up in the managed security area, he jumped at it.
In August 2018, Raj began his career at ESTI.
One of Raj’s most memorable projects thus far has been at a mine site doing networking separation. Working at a mine site entails many safety protocols as well as the general awareness that the work being done directly affects the very lives of those in the mine at the time. The HVAC, the safety switches – it is a lot of pressure to get things done correctly and timely, all the while keeping safety at top of mind. Working at these types of locales also requires that you are aware of your own personal space at all times.
An additional highlight has been working as a liaison between a distributor and a client installing approximately 25 different firewalls to support their infrastructure.
COVID-19 has impacted the infrastructure/networking practice at ESTI, and while there is not as much on-site work taking place, much work can be done remotely and significant planning work is also taking place. Raj is looking forward to when seeing a client in person is a reality once again.
During weather-appropriate weekends, Raj and his wife often take to the open roads of Saskatchewan, discovering new campsites, and taking roads-less-traveled to see new interesting things. Like all of us, they look forward to a time when they can go further afield and see friends and family in person.
