IT Focused Youth Internship Program

The Saskatoon Industry-Education Council (SIEC) is a non-profit organization working closely with three school divisions (Saskatoon Public, Greater Saskatoon Catholic and Prairie Spirit), community based organizations, government agencies and employers to provide career development and exploration opportunities for youth.  A Board of Directors representing industry, education and a variety of other organizations governs the SIEC.  Mark Dick, CEO of ESTI Consulting Services, is proud to sit on the SIEC board as a business representative specific to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

For 9 years now, the SIEC has run the Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) providing students from the three school divisions, a chance to try out a career they are interested in with a local company.  For 6 weeks, these students perform roles in the trades, culinary disciplines or the ICT sector.  In 2013, 93 students were able to participate at 59 participating businesses.  Since the inception of the Internship ICT stream 3 years ago, ESTI has participated by hosting a student from either grade 11 or 12, and providing a small taste of what an ICT career entails.

ESTI is proud to support this program and we strongly encourage other ICT based businesses to participate in this unique program.  Applications from high school students greatly outnumber the available participating businesses in all sectors demonstrating the desire from students for this type of program.  Applications to placements are currently 2 to 1.

Congratulations to the SIEC team and SYIP team for running such a successful program.  More information on this program can be found on the FuturePaths website at FuturePaths.
